Tanzania--Kenya's neighbor to the South

Animals of the Serengeti

Anchor Image

Our safari trip consisted of two weeks in Kenya and one week in Tanzania.  It was nice to visit both countries for a broader perspective on how each is using its diverse animals to attract tourism.

Tanzania is larger than Kenya and has 125 different tribes, compared with Kenya's 45 different tribes.

DISCLAIMER

My photo gallery for this blog is of varying quality.  That is because many photos were taken from the moving jeep.  Sometimes, the subjects were far away, such that expanding and cropping of the subject lowered the resolution.  Some of the subjects were not happy with my having taken their photos.  I tried to be unobtrusive when possible.  Don’t forget to click the photos to expand them and see the short descriptions.

Personal Reflections on the Vietnam War

Anchor Image

The Vietnam War, as it is known to Americans, is known in Vietnam as the American War.  Vietnam has suffered through wars with the French and the Chinese.  But Vietnam's victory over the US military in 1973 demonstrated the limits of US military hardware against a people defending their home territory.  The US faced this lesson again in Afghanistan.  The United States of America's military budget is larger than the combined military budgets of the next nine countries.  We cannot trust that we will remain safe in the world solely because of our tremendous military expenditures.

Welcome to Portugal

Once again as I arrive in Europe, I’m overwhelmed with the long rich awareness of history and the rich culture. This is the first time I’ve visited Portugal. Susan and I are traveling with our friends and regular travel companions, Bill and Linn, from Georgia...

Lhasa, Tibet

Buddhism under Chinese Rule

Anchor Image

The inclusion of Lhasa, Tibet, in Viking's Wonders of China cruise was a big incentive for us to book this trip.  Three nights and two full days of tours were only a superficial introduction to this ancient culture.  But this was better than nothing.  I don't think we otherwise would have ever planned a trip to Tibet.  It's simply too isolated, and obtaining the required Chinese visa was expensive.

Four years ago, Susan and I toured Jordan for the first time. Through the internet, I hired a driver/tour guide based on an ad from a Jordan tour company. This driver, Mazen, met us at the airport holding a sign with our names on it. Spending hours together with him in the car that first year, we became close friends with Mazen. We have hired him as our tour guide during our three subsequent Jordan visits. Mazen has invited us to his house twice for dinner with him and his wife. Both he and his wife speak enough English to get to know each other well enough to cement our friendship. . .

There are many hamams in Istanbul, both ancient and modern.  The hamam we visited was built in 1741 and bills itself as the last hamam constructed during Ottoman Empire.

A Tourist's View of Israel

The world is a big place…I was picked up at 3am to travel to the Mumbai airport for a 6:40am Turkish Airlines flight, which flew seven hours from Mumbai to Istanbul. After a couple of hours in the chaotic, crowded, and very international Istanbul airport, I flew two hours to the Ben Gurion airport outside Tel Aviv Israel. Met by Susan, we traveled half an hour by taxi to the town of Rehovot, where Susan’s sister and her husband have lived for many years. . .
